This class has two main foci:
1) Symbolic Logic is the art of expressing the logical structure of statements via symbols. For example, the sentence, "If it is an apple, then it is not a banana" could be represented as "a --> ~b" (if "a"pple is true, then "b"anana is false). Doing this allows us to analyze logic itself as well as to evaluate the arguments of others.
2) Rhetoric is the use of argument in persuasion. In other words, it's the art of convincing someone that something is reasonable. However, many people in this world attempt to use rhetoric to convince you of something that is false (whether they themselves realize it or not); therefore, students must develop the skills to recognize how to use this themselves as well as to judge the speech of others.
